For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
2 Corinthians 5:21 (NKJV)

Sin entered into the world and was passed on to all mankind through one man, Adam. God made Him (Jesus) who knew no sin to become sin so that we can be freed from sin, death and all its attendant consequences such as poverty, sickness, or oppression. Jesus went to the cross in a representative capacity; that is, He stood in the place of mankind as the accused person in the trial of life and death before the sovereign God, and was declared guilty of every charge. Mankind was set free and declared not guilty because of Jesus. Anyone who receives this free gift of salvation by faith is free indeed and has passed from death to eternal life.

Double jeopardy is a principle of law which prevents a person from being accused or made to stand trial twice for the same offence, on the same facts and between the same parties, after a court of law has already given a valid and final verdict on the matter. Violating this will amount to double trial and an infringement of the person’s right to fair treatment which is protected by the law in most countries.

Beloved, if you are in Christ, the most sovereign God has justified you and declared you not guilty. Can you imagine a scenario where a judge has declared an accused person not guilty, and then the person comes back to the judge to say," I think I am guilty because my accuser says I am guilty; so, please give me the punishment I deserve”? That is not likely to happen.

Beloved, our own responsibility as believers is to live according to our new nature which gives us the ability and the capacity to choose and live right according to God's standard. The next time the devil tries to load you with a sense of guilt, sin or condemnation, over anything you have done or will do, you can just tell him to get lost or tell him to take it up with your senior advocate, Jesus Christ.

Prayer & Confession of Faith

I am the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. God has declared me not guilty. I choose to live right and make right decisions because Christ has given me the capacity to live right through the gift of righteousness. Sin has no dominion over me. Amen!
